Basic Terms of a Home

I take for granted that my clients understand construction terminology like I do.  I’ve been building and renovating homes in San Antonio for over seventeen years and it is almost second nature to talk about the components that make up a home.  It isn’t until later conversations with clients that they tell me that they had no clue as to what I was talking about.  It would be like me going to a doctor and asking him to explain the intricacies of deep vain thrombosis.  The diagram above shows you everything you need to know about general terms that builders and contractors use.  Click here to go to my Construction Terminology Cheat Sheet.  If you are considering updating or remodeling your home, study these terms before you begin meeting with contractors to get estimates for the construction work.  Print the diagram out an have it with you so you can easily refer to it throughout the meeting.  You will be glad you did.  If your contractor is still using words you are not familiar with, ask him/her what they mean.  This will show you have  knowledgeable and the willingness of the contractor to answer your questions.  If they are evasive or don’t answer your questions, just imagine what they will be like when they have your money.

Contractor Selection for Home Remodeling

Choosing a contractor is probably one of the most important financial decisions you will make throughout your lifetime.  Be smart about your decision.  Do your research about the company you are thinking about hiring.  Google the company name and the owners name to see what comes up.  Are they licensed with the Better Business Bureau and do they hold the proper licensed with your local city government?  Make sure their insurance is valid.  Call the insurance company to make sure.  Ask for references and go see previous and current job sites.   The benefits of remodeling can greatly outweigh having to move and purchase a new home.  Do your own research.  Ask questions.  You will be glad you did.
