How Long Does Home Remodeling or a New Room Addition Take to Build?

Well, it all depends on your scope of work (i.e. moving walls, adding new exterior square footage, project description), time of the year you are remodeling and size of the new remodeling project. Replacing kitchen cabinet and counter tops can take about 2-3 weeks.  If you are knocking down or moving walls, the project can take longer because there might be plumbing or electrical that needs to be moved or re-routed.  A major home renovation can take anywhere from 3-4 months depending on the scope of work and detail of the project.    Weather can also play a factor in determining the length of the construction project.  Here in San Antonio, we lose a few days to rain, but up north, snow can be a huge factor.   Getting the proper building permits can take a few weeks depending on the type of construction you are doing.  Make sure the contractor you hire pulls all necessary permits and posts them at your job site during construction.

Planning and project management play a key role to any successful remodeling project.  Keep in mind that when moving walls, in the City of San Antonio, will require a building permit.  Inspections will need to be scheduled and this can sometimes take a few days. If you are planning on remodeling your home around Christmas time, plan on losing at least two weeks during the holiday season.  Please keep an open mind and be patient during the construction of your new home remodel or room addition.  Problems arise everyday that need to be solved.  This is why hiring a professional that you feel can solve these issue’s quickly and on the least amount of time is key.”  Danny Garcia, owner of Rhino Design Build in San Antonio, Texas.

What to look for when hiring a contractor:

Make sure they are licensed with your local city government.  Ask for  a copy of the contractors insurance and call the company to verify the coverage is still in place.   Ask for references and go to personally see the work they completed.  Talk to the homeowner and find out their experience with the contractor.  Make sure the contractor is a  member of the Better Business Bureau.  The BBB will help mediate any disputes you may have with your contractor.
